Saint of the Day - Bl. Thaddeus McCarthy

Thaddeus MacCarthy, of Munster, Ireland, became bishop of Ross at the age of twenty-seven, exhibiting great zeal for the salvation of souls and a deep dedication to preaching. But despite the fact that Bishop MacCarthy had been appointed by Pope Sixtus IV, an auxiliary bishop of Ross claimed the episcopal seat for himself. An earl supporting this rival claimant even confiscated church property from Bishop MacCarthy, forcing him out of his own see. In the end, Pope Sixtus’ successor Innocent VIII reassigned Bishop MacCarthy to the conjoined Irish sees of Cork and Cloyne. But when the bishop came to take possession of his new episcopal charge, he found himself barred from his cathedral by laymen opposed to his rule. Journeying to Rome to plead his cause, Bishop MacCarthy obtained Pope Alexander VI’s full support. As Bishop MacCarthy was traveling back from Rome, humbly disguised as a pilgrim, he died quite suddenly while lodged at Ivrea, Italy. Many miracles occurred at his tomb.

 

He was beatified in Rome in 1896. Following his beatification, a relic of his remains was sent by the people of Ivrea to the Cathedral in Cork. The reliquary was remounted on a piece of carved Cork limestone by Ken Thompson as part of the 1996 refurbishment of the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne.

Special Day for Grandparents at Kealkil National School

“Kealkill N.S. celebrate a special day for Grandparents”

 

 

We would like to congratulate the pupils and staff of Kealkill N.S. who held a special Grandparents Day earlier this month. There was a huge attendance at the school and the special Mass to mark this occasion and we hope that all the grandparents enjoyed their special day.

 

Fr. Donal Cotter celebrated a mass of thanksgiving in Kealkill Church and noted that it was the first time that such a Mass had been celebrated there. He spoke about the special relationship between grandparents and grandchildren and noted that the children had chosen readings, prayers and a communion reflection on the theme of grandparents being like guardian angels (the Feast of Guardian Angels had been held earlier that week).

 

We are delighted the day was such a success.

The Deep End – ‘For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve’

Today, Mission Sunday, Catholics worldwide are asked to recommit themselves to mission, to the gospel message. Many people think of missionaries as those who travel to so-called developing countries & dedicate their lives to serving the poor and spreading the gospel. Today we pray especially for them but we also recommit ourselves to following the gospel message in prayer, in our daily lives, in our relationships with others and in sharing that message.

We live in an extremely unequal world that is in desperate need of the gospel message of hope, solidarity, peace, love and equality. The Mission month of October reminds us all that we are bearers of that message. We are all called to be missionaries wherever we live; we are all invited to love and serve God by loving and serving others. That’s how we share our faith with the world. The Mission month of October offers everyone the chance to renew their commitment to the Gospel. Can we be missionaries to our own families and to the people around us? That is one of the more challenging tasks in our society today.

Saint of the Day - St. Teresa of Avila

St. Teresa of Avila - Spanish Carmelite nun and mystic

Born in Avila, Spain, on March 28, 1515, St. Teresa was the daughter of a Toledo merchant and his second wife, who died when Teresa was 15, one of ten children. Shortly after this event, Teresa was entrusted to the care of the Augustinian nuns. After reading the letters of St. Jerome, Teresa resolved to enter a religious life. In 1535, she joined the Carmelite Order. She spent a number of relatively average years in the convent, punctuated by a severe illness that left her legs paralyzed for three years, but then experienced a vision of "the sorely wounded Christ" that changed her life forever.

From this point forward, Teresa moved into a period of increasingly ecstatic experiences in which she came to focus more and more sharply on Christ's passion. With these visions as her impetus, she set herself to the reformation of her order, beginning with her attempt to master herself and her adherence to the rule. Gathering a group of supporters, Teresa endeavored to create a more primitive type of Carmelite. From 1560 until her death, Teresa struggled to establish and broaden the movement of Discalcedor shoeless Carmelites. During the mid-1560s, she wrote the Way of Perfection and the Meditations on the Canticle. In 1567, she met St. John of the Cross, who she enlisted to extend her reform into the male side of the Carmelite Order. Teresa died in 1582.

St. Teresa left to posterity many new convents, which she continued founding up to the year of her death. She also left a significant legacy of writings, which represent important benchmarks in the history of Christian mysticism. These works include the Way of Perfection and the Interior Castle. She also left an autobiography, the Life of Teresa of Avila.

The Deep End – ‘The Impossible is often the untried.’

 As I am writing this, the Olympics have just finished and I have been glued to the TV for two weeks of good news stories, images of solidarity, humanity at its best and the universal language of sport breaking down all cultural and political barriers (if only for 16 days). What struck me most was the interview given by Katie Taylor right after she won her gold medal, her first words being ‘Where would I be without God in my life?’ Katie decided aged 11 she would be Olympic champion and aged 26 that’s exactly what she achieved. Katie talks of the Bible as her psychological tool and Jesus as the strength in her life.

The man in today’s Gospel is a man of faith but he wants to know what rules to obey and what things to avoid so that he can simply get on with things and achieve some deeper existence without too much bother. The man goes away sad perhaps thinking about a goal he had set but not achieved because he was unwilling to give everything. What Jesus asks seems impossible to him. We are not given impossible tasks. We are given dreams that can be achieved but that will involve hard work, determination, perseverance and bouts along the way. There is no easy path to a deeper involvement with life, whether that  e in our relationship with God or with a community, a special cause or a lifelong dream. West Cork Talent Competition 2012

West Cork Talent Competition was recently launched at the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry by the principal and staff of  St. Finbarr’s Boys’ School.

This is a fundraising event for the refurbishment of I.T. facilities at the school. St. Finbarr’s Boys’ school is in the process of introducing I pads in all classrooms which will require a wireless infrastructure at the school.

The West Cork Talent Competition is inviting entries from all entertainers of all styles and ages to participate in this exciting event resulting in 1^st Prize value of €1000 and the presentation of the Perpetual West Cork Talent Trophy.

 Registration is almost complete but there are a number of limited places available – email: westcorktalent@gmail.com for info.

 This is a wonderful opportunity if you like to sing, dance, play an instrument or any other type of stage performance!!

The first heat will take place at the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry on Oct. 19^th at 8pm. A great night’s entertainment is guaranteed!!

Care for the Aged Association is 45 years in existence this year and to celebrate this they are hosting a social night in the Bantry Bay Hotel on Thursday, 25^th October at 7.45pm. All present and past volunteers are invited to attend.

     Bantry Men’s Shed.
We are looking for men who would be interested in setting up a Men’s Shed here in Bantry. If anybody is interested in the Men’s Shed call in to the West Cork Development Partnership Office on any Friday we are open from 9:30am until 5pm. What is a Men’s Shed?
The Community Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard.
If you looked inside one you could see anything! From a number of men restoring furniture to perhaps restoring bicycles for a local school, or maybe fixing lawn mowers. You might also see both young and older men learning new skills from each other and maybe also learning something
about life from the men they are working with.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN

 

Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honours responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts. God calls each one of us to be a saint.

John Henry Newman, the 19th century's most important English-speaking Roman Catholic theologian, spent the first half of his life as an Anglican and the second half as a Roman Catholic. He was a priest, popular preacher, writer and eminent theologian in both Churches.

Born in London, England, he studied at Oxford's Trinity College, was a tutor at Oriel College and for 17 years was vicar of the university church, St. Mary the Virgin.
Historical research made Newman suspect that the Roman Catholic Church was in closest continuity with the Church that Jesus established. In 1845, he was received into full communion as a Catholic. Two years later he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome and joined the Congregation of the Oratory, founded three centuries earlier by St. Philip Neri. Returning to England, Newman founded Oratory houses in Birmingham and London and for seven years served as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland.
Newman eventually wrote 40 books and 21,000 letters that survive. Most famous are his book-length Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine, Apologia Pro Vita Sua (his spiritual autobiography up to 1864) and Essay on the Grammar of Assent.

When Newman was named a cardinal in 1879, he took as his motto "Cor ad cor loquitur" (Heart speaks to heart). Pope Benedict XVI beatified Newman on September 19, 2010, at Crofton Park (near Birmingham). The pope noted Newman's emphasis on the vital place of revealed religion in civilized society but also praised his pastoral zeal for the sick, the poor, the bereaved and those in prison.

Mealagh Valley

Mealagh Valley at the Community Hall, Ards on Friday October 12th. at 8.30P.M.. The usual bus service will run from Bantry. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Mealagh Valley Community Centre Ltd. The Centre Directors, Officers & Committee wish to thank all who supported/arranged our Flag Day held in Bantry on Friday Sept.21st.. The amount collected was £882.60. We are making good progress with the improvements to our Community Hall & Grounds and are on schedule to open as planned on Saturday December 1st.

 

Trails Day Walks in the MealaghValley.

As part of National Trails Day, the Mealagh Valley Walks Group will be hosting a series of walks on this Sunday October 7^th. There will be a range of walks with options for children, families, and more serious hikers.

Claire Heardman, Wildlife Ranger with National Parks and Wildlife Service will be leading a nature walk along the river at Mealagh Woods for families and children. The waking route will also include a new 3km loop walk through the woods which run between Coomleigh to Barnagowlanes. For the more adventurous, the will be a stiff hike through woodlands and over MullaghmeshaMountain with breathtaking views of the Corkcoastline and Kerry mountains. Bus transport to the walks will be provided, starting at the Mealagh Valley Community Hall from 11.00am. The walks will be followed by tea and sandwiches at the hall as walkers return. Events are free on the day, but we ask for donations towards the cost of refreshments etc. All funds raised will be in aid of Mealagh Valley Community Hall, which is currently being renovated with Leader funding to facilitate a range of local activities in the Mealagh Valley.

 

Pieta House, SUICIDE CRISIS CENTRE , SELF-HARM CRISIS CENTRE is holding a public meeting on Thursday October 18^th , at 8.00pm in the Imperial Hotel, Cork . This is an information meeting to discuss the proposed opening of the Pieta House Service in Bishopstown, Cork .
